Saruvamalai is a rocky dry forest area in Mohanur Taluk, Nammakal district that receives heavy rains during the monsoon period and undergoes harsh drought during summer. Nansey Restoration LLP and Wakeourlake Team and Environmental Enthusiasts were involved in reviving the forest and its biodiversity damaged during harsh summers and forest fires.

The Kolli Hills Forest Fire-2019

A major forest fire occurred around the end of March 2019 in Kolli Hills and approximately 25 hectares of forestlandwere affected in the fire. This devastating incident claimed the lives and habitat of several birds, and small animals and damaged the ecosystem and biodiversity of Kolli Hills.

Nansey Restoration LLP, Pattikadu Pasumai Pattarai, Wakeourlake Team, Nature enthusiasts, Forest department officials, and Kandhasamy Gounder College of Arts and Science college students trekked Kolli Hills to reforest the areas that were affected bya forest fire on the hills and decided to improve the green cover which was destroyed by the fires in March 2019. Around 30,000 seed balls were prepared to aid in bringing back the greenery and biodiversity in the kolli hills including the Saruvamalai region, the seed varieties include Neem and Tamarind. These seed balls were prepared by students of the college and were thrown during the monsoons in fire-damaged areas of the region.

Latest Update – Nov 2019

Apart from feeding the birds and critters at the weekends, Pattikadu Pasumai Pattarai volunteers with the help of forest department support are involved in afforestation and improving the green cover in the area. Plans are already set to try a Miyawaki forest next to the government school and plant tree saplings in the railway station area.
